The New York Times reports that McDonald's, Wendy's, and Popeye's have agreed to stop purchasing poultry products treated with certain antibiotics. Some poultry producers are also reducing the use of these antibiotics in the chickens they produce. Overuse of antibiotics in farm animals increases antibiotic resistance in bacteria, threatening human health. Bayer Corporation, maker of antibiotics, has refused to stop selling antibiotics for use in farm animals, despite pressure from the FDA, Environmental Defense, and nearly 10,000 Action Network Activists.
